Tints and Shades

What is a tint in art?

A tint is where an artist adds color to white to create a lighter version of the color. An example of a tint is pink. Pink is a tint created by adding white to red. A shade is where an artist adds black to a color to darken it down.

What is a complementary shade in art?

Complementary colors are defined as colors that have maximum contrast for each other. The fundamental complementary pairs for painters are red/green, yellow/violet, and blue/orange, but each intermediate color also has its unique complementary.
