Most of you have seen Pablo Picasso's doves and his famous portraits of lovers, lords, and ladies. His distorted Cubist faces, horses, and bulls. Did you also know that he painted on vessels and erected giant sculptures out of stone and steel... and cardboard??? He did and you can make your own version with a few readily available materials. But first let's get inspired by the master works...
Assignment: Create a Picasso-inspired sculpture.
You will be graded on your overall design.
-
Two distinct face shapes were used
-
Pablo Picasso-esque features were used to decorate the faces
-
Each face shape has colorful designs on each side.
-
Both faces and a base will be combined to make a three-dimensional sculpture.
-
Both face shapes stand upright on their base, these means they aren't flopping over.
Materials:
-
8.5 x 11 cardboard, poster board, or thick mixed media paper (drawing paper). Use whatever paper you have at home that can stand upright, If you have thin paper you can put skewers, chopsticks or pencils between the layers of the faces.
-
1 paper tube (paper towel size)
-
small 5" x 5" cardboard square for base
-
colored pencils
-
markers
-
glue stick
-
acrylic or tempera paint
-
scissors for cutting paper
-
hot glue gun
STEP 5
Cut 4 entry points in your paper tube.
This is where the faces will rest.
STEP 6 DECORATE A BASE
-
The base can be made of anything. Suggested material, paper towel, or toilet paper center (the brown part).
-
Add some colorful details for your base. Look at the examples on this page for inspiration or come up with your own.
-
Details can be added with washi tape, paint, oil pastel, colored pencil, another medium.
STEP 7 COMBINE THE FACES
Glue the mirror images of your face
together

STEP 1
Draw your own Picasso face shapes on a sheet of 8.5" X 11" sheets of paper. These drawings must be large; use most of the paper. TIP: something thick like cardboard will stand up easier than actual paper.
STEP 2
You want thick, black lines, so when you are drawing this on your own make sure to cover over your pencil lines with black marker or a black oil pastel.
STEP 3
Cut out the face shapes.

STEP 8
Cut a 3" notch down the center of your first face and a 4" cut on your other face. You are creating an interlocking system for your faces to connect.

STEP 4
Color your faces with oil pastel, colored pencil, paint, or some other art medium. Remember to draw and color on both sides of your board/paper because this is a 3-D sculpture.
STEP 9
Once your faces are interconnected, you will slide them in to place on the top of your paper tube. Inserting each section into the proper notch.

STEP 10
If you have a hot glue gun reinforce all the connected points with a little bit of hot glue. It will help reinforce your paper structure. If you don't have access to a hot glue gun, ignore this step.
STEP 11
Add the bottom of your paper tube to the square cardboard base. attach with a ring of hot glue on the end of your paper tube. If you don't have access to a hot glue gun, ignore this step.
