Make yer map

About this Project:

Create a finished map by placing the creatures that you made for the last project onto an area of land and sea that you will produce.

Common Questions:

1) Do I have to draw my creatures on the map the way they are (the same angle) as on the original maps?
    a) No. Draw them at whatever angle you want?

2) How big does my drawing need to be?
    a) It needs to fill the whole picture.

3) What size do the continents and islands have to be?
     a) You get to choose. This is your project, only you know what                 size they should be.

4) What size do my sea creatures have to be?
    a) You get to choose. This is your project, only you know what          size they should be.

5) What type of paper do I have to use?
    a) Whatever you have.

6) How do I decorate this?
    a) Use what you have. Pencil, Colored Pencil, Tea, Coffee,                  Spices, Candy, Watercolor...

How I started: I wanted to make a map that was made up of lots of islands. An area that is similar to Indonesia. I put some numbers on my rough draft to show you the order I drew the objects on my map.

Expectations for an A grade:

  • The map shouldn't have huge blank areas.

  • You need at least five sea creatures.

  • Any drawing medium shouldn't be colored in only using only one shade. It needs multiple greys if using only graphite pencil. It shouldn't have only one blue in the ocean. Basically, it shouldn't look like you scribbled in color because you had to turn it in at the last second.

  • There should be texture, aka line detail on the creatures.

  • If your continents/islands or creatures start to lose their shape after you shade/color/paint your project you need to go back and add more detail. I would probably redo the line details on my project.

After you have drawn the major details on your map it's time to add color and/or shading.

IMPORTANT... Lighten up your pencil lines unless you're planning to shade with only a pencil. Pencil lines stick out like a sore thumb if you use any other medium because they show through the other medium.

Ways to make alternative materials...

A user on Facebook, Sandy Sweets who is a member of Art Teacher Life Hacks posted the following images of her alternatives to paint and gave some advice.

"Well everyone, here are the results of my experiment! I used warm or hot water to dilute each thing I painted with except for the egg dye, for that I just used vinegar. I liked working with the Kool-Aid and coffee the most, they seemed the easiest to work with for single colors. If you are using egg dye, just use the vinegar and don’t dilute it with the water. I think the tea is just too light to work with and the paprika was a disaster. If you are working with turmeric or chili powder, dilute, let sit over night the dilute again. It seems to help get rid of some of the graininess so that you have more pigment to work with. I have also added photos showing how they work on printer and lined paper".
