Scratch Art Practice
For the practice assignment, you will have to finish the following activities. They will be completed on the same piece of paper.
-
Create a value scale that has at least 5 levels of value.
-
Shade a sphere the has at least 5 levels of value.
-
Draw a Moorish Idol fish then fill in each segment with at least 5 levels of value.

Step 2: Find an image of a Moorish idol. This image will take up at least one-third of the practice sheet of scratchboard. You can choose whatever image you want. Here is one that I found online.
STEP 1: Put the black scratchboard on a piece of paper; black or binder. Trace around the scratchboard so you'll know how big your drawing should be.

STEP 3: I filled in the rectangle that is the size of my scratchboard with this drawing. On the paper you must have:
-
the fish that I found online
-
a circle with shadow
-
rectangle for a value scale
You don't have to arrange your objects the same as me, but all 3 objects must be included in the rectangle.
You can make a more difficult drawing if you want to as long as you incorporate:
-
a fish
-
a circle with shadow (the pearl and/or the air bubble)
-
a value scale
(will be incorporated into the rocks)
Creating Value
Activity 1 - Create a value scale without damaging the surface of the scratchboard. There should be at least 5 values on your scratchboard. See the example below. USE SMALL STROKES!!!! It is easier to fix mistakes if you use smaller strokes because they are easier to cover up.
You can use a basic rectangle if you want but if you feel like challenging yourself you can do your value scale as seaweed, rock, or some other object a fish would live near.
The scratches on your box need to fill the entire space. Edge to edge. See area below.

1 2 3 4 5
1 is darkest and 5 is the lightest
Activity 2 - Create a sphere that has at least five levels of value. You could make multiple small spheres (think air bubbles) instead of having one large sphere.

Activity 3 - Create realistic value on your fish drawing by scratching at least five levels of value onto the image.

This example is missing the value scale and the fish doesn't have five levels of value.
